What Is Dental Sedation?
Sedation is an odourless and safe gas that is administered to you through a mask. It doesn’t put you to sleep but, in fact, relaxes your body and relieves stress. The gas (nitrous oxide) is commonly referred to as laughing gas because it has the tendency to make patients feel rather giddy and happy!
The laughing gas affects your nerve receptors that trigger feelings like being relaxed, happy or carefree. Though it can affect every patient differently (and every patient will receive a different dosage), most patients report feeling much more relaxed and calm shortly after administration.
Once the mask is removed at the end of your treatment, you should feel back to normal in no time and be able to drive yourself home.
Why Does Dental Anxiety Occur?
Dental anxiety can be triggered by a few different factors, but it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. You’re not alone. 40% of the Canadian population is experiencing dentophobia too. This could be because of:
- Afraid of the poking and scraping feel and sound
- Afraid of gagging or choking during the procedure
- Have had a previous traumatic dental experience
- Fear of pain
- Embarrassed or uncomfortable with own teeth
- Trust issues
- General anxiety, depression or PTSD
- Have other conditions like OCD or germophobia
- Etc.
Your fear of the dentist shouldn’t affect your oral health. You still need to visit the dentist every six months for proper dental care to reduce the risk of gum disease. Our team is understanding, professional and respectful and can help you through your appointments.
Is Nitrous Oxide Safe For Children?
Yes. Nitrous oxide works as a mild sedation for children who get nervous visiting us. Don’t worry, we don’t take it personally! A dental office is full of weird smells and different sounds that children may find scary, but here at Hamilton Mountain, we want to ensure every patient feels as relaxed as possible as soon as they walk in our office doors.
Even if you’re just visiting us for a general cleaning appointment (or no matter how long your appointment is), we’d be more than happy to administer nitrous oxide to calm your nerves.
