Dental Crowns & Bridges in Hamilton

Hamilton Dental Crowns can help restore the function and appearance of your mouth if you’re missing one or more teeth. They’re completely custom-made per patient after taking a mould of your mouth. Materials may vary, but they’re typically made from porcelain or ceramic with a combination of zirconium or gold.

What Is A Dental Crown?

Dental crowns, also referred to as caps, fit over a prepared tooth that’s been broken, cracked, chipped, or extracted. Crowns are custom-made per patient (this typically takes around two to three weeks) so in the meantime, your tooth will be reshaped and you’ll wear a temporary crown until your permanent one is ready. Dental cement will hold it in place. If you’ve had a dental implant placed, a crown will be attached to the abutment once you’ve healed.

Crowns are very durable and long-lasting. By following the proper oral hygiene routine, crowns can last anywhere from ten to fifteen years or more before needing to be replaced. Crowns are indistinguishable from your natural teeth as they mimic the colour of the rest of your teeth. For the next few days to a week following receiving your permanent crown, it’s best to avoid harder foods like candy, chewy meats, apples, etc.

Some patients may also experience some discomfort around their gums where the dental cement is holding the crown, but this shouldn’t last longer than several days. It’s important to remember that just because you have a false tooth doesn’t mean you’re not susceptible to gum disease if you don’t look after your teeth properly. The gum line under your false tooth can still be affected.

What Is A Dental Bridge?

A bridge is just that – a bridge of teeth that are affixed to your existing teeth or surrounding implants. Your teeth are prepared just like above. They’ll be filed down and reshaped to fit the bridge and a mould will be taken and sent to a lab. During your next visit, in approximately two to three weeks, we’ll place the bridge and ensure it fits comfortably. Just like crowns, they look and feel completely natural.

There are a few different bridge options and during your initial consultation, we’ll discuss the best options for you.

Same-Day Crown Repairs

Thanks to our CEREC CAM, if you’ve cracked or chipped your crown, we can make same-day restorations to save you valuable time and restore your smile as quickly as possible!

Aftercare

Crowns and bridges can last for fifteen years or more if proper oral hygiene is followed. Brushing your teeth should still be done twice daily, preferably once in the morning and once in the evening, followed by flossing and rinsing with mouthwash once a day. Regular checkup appointments should be made with us every six months so we can ensure everything is how it should be and tartar buildup is removed from around your crown or bridge.
