Porcelain Veneers Hamilton

Dental veneers in Hamilton are a cosmetic solution for minor cracked and damaged teeth, misshapen teeth, discoloured teeth, crooked teeth, or gapped teeth. Dental veneers are made from a very thin layer of either porcelain or resin compound material that bonds to the front of your teeth. Both types of dental veneers look just like natural teeth. At your consultation, we discuss which might be the best material for you personally.

HOW DO DENTAL VENEERS WORK?

The process may require a few visits to our office, but we ensure you’re as relaxed as possible each time. During your first appointment, we want to discuss why you are interested in dental veneers, how they work, and how they are placed.

If you decide to go ahead with dental veneers in Hamilton, the surface of your teeth will be prepared under local anesthesia. A grinding tool is used to prepare the surface so there’s room for the veneer on the natural tooth, without it looking thick. It also helps ensure proper bonding, as the grinding tool also creates a rougher texture so the veneer can bond more easily. The amount of enamel removed is minimal. Dental cement then holds the dental veneers in place; we carefully place the veneers, since the bonding is permanent.

We also take X-rays, so accurate impressions can be taken of your mouth, to create custom veneers for you. If you are receiving porcelain veneers, the custom veneers in Hamilton are created in a lab, and you will have to return for another visit for them to be permanently bonded, once they are ready. You will be given temporary veneers while you wait. For composite resin veneers in Hamilton, thin layers of composite resin materials are applied directly onto your natural teeth in the same appointment.

Can I Have Multiple Veneers?

Yes! Patients can receive six or ten veneers at once if they so wish. Veneers are used for cosmetic reasons, to cover misshapen teeth, crooked teeth, discoloured teeth, gapped teeth, and damaged teeth. A veneer can be placed on a single natural tooth that you are concerned about, or a full set can be bonded to cover multiple teeth to treat the visible portion of your entire smile. Dental veneers can be placed on both the top and bottom teeth.

How To Look After Veneers

Your oral hygiene shouldn’t change just because you have veneers. It’s important to keep up with brushing twice a day, along with flossing once a day. By not looking after your veneers, they can easily begin to discolour at the connection site (where it’s cemented).

Those who smoke have a higher chance of noticing this happen. And remember, just because you have a veneer covering a portion of your tooth, you aren’t protected against concerns like gum disease, gum recession, or bone loss if you do not care for your teeth and veneers properly.

PROS & CONS OF DENTAL VENEERS

As with any treatment option, there are pros and cons associated with dental veneers, and you may not necessarily be a good candidate for them. Our Hamilton Mountain Clinic’s Dentist team always remains honest. We will discuss with you what options might be best for you, including whether porcelain veneers or composite resin veneers may be better for you, or whether there are treatments (other than veneers) that better suit your situation. We’re passionate about patient education and want to help you make better-informed decisions.

Pros:

  • Both composite resin and porcelain veneers look and feel like real teeth.
  • Both types of veneers are more stain-resistant than natural enamel; porcelain veneers are the most stain-resistant option.
  • Dental veneers are very durable; porcelain veneers can even last upwards of 20 years.
  • The veneer process is not painful. The grinding process is done under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. Side effects afterward should dissipate within a few days.
  • Composite and porcelain veneers cover moderately stained teeth and other dental imperfections effectively.

Cons:

  • It may take anywhere from two to four weeks to receive your custom veneers, although you will be given temporary veneers in the meantime.
  • Veneers can be more expensive than other treatment options, especially porcelain veneers. As this is a cosmetic procedure, dental insurance won’t cover the cost.
  • Porcelain veneers can’t be fixed if they become cracked or broken, and will need to be fully replaced. Very minor cracks in composite resin veneers can be repaired, but any significant damage will mean these veneers will need to be replaced, too.
  • Dental cement needs to be touched up, more often if you smoke or place excessive wear and tear pressures on it.
  • Dental veneers are not the best option for those who grind or clench their teeth, as this can cause them to chip or crack.
  • Choosing to have composite or porcelain veneers is a permanent decision, because of the enamel removed to fit and bond a veneer.
