Dental Crowns Hamilton
If you have missing teeth or misshapen teeth, there are ways to replace a lost tooth or restore damaged teeth to prevent further damage. Let’s discuss dental crowns as a potential solution at your next appointment with our Hamilton dentist. Dental crowns can be a long-lasting solution you’ve been searching for and have the ability to achieve some of your oral health goals. We welcome new patients with a smile!
What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a little tooth cap that fits over a damaged tooth that’s been prepared (filed down); they are also used as the false tooth for a dental implant. They may also be used to strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy or to help support dental bridges. A custom crown is made for you after a mold is taken and sent to a dental crown lab. They take approximately two to three weeks to prepare, but in the meantime, you’ll be provided with a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready. Most crowns in Hamilton are either porcelain crowns or composite resin crowns.
The reason patients in Hamilton may require a dental crown varies, but a dental crown may be a suitable solution for you to strengthen an existing tooth that is broken or weakened, or to replace a missing tooth. If you are anxious, let your Hamilton dentist know when you book your restorative appointment. We will try to make your experience more comfortable if you are:
- Afraid of poking and scraping
- Afraid of gagging or choking during the procedure
- Have had a previous traumatic dental experience
- Fear of pain
- Embarrassed or uncomfortable with own teeth
- Trust issues
- General anxiety, depression or PTSD
- Have other conditions like OCD or germophobia
- Any other concerns
Dental crowns are a durable, long-lasting, and natural-looking solution. Porcelain crowns are especially natural looking, and an excellent choice for front teeth, closely mimicking natural teeth. By following a proper oral hygiene routine, dental crowns can last anywhere from ten to fifteen years or more before needing to be replaced.
Dental Crown Aftercare: Tips From Your Hamilton Dentist
If you’ve received a temporary crown after root canal therapy or dental implant surgery, to protect damaged teeth, or as part of preparation for dental bridges, once your natural tooth has been prepared, you will need to avoid harder and stickier foods until your final crown is in place. This includes toffee, gum, steak, apples, ice, corn on the cob, raw vegetables, nuts, etc. When it comes to brushing your teeth, you’ll need to exercise caution and not be too rough until your permanent crown is affixed. You may also want to use sensitive toothpaste and a soft toothbrush in the meantime as the prepared tooth may feel a little sensitive to hot and cold temperatures for a few days. You can also floss as normal, but try sliding the flossing between your teeth, not up and down as this action can dislodge dental crowns.
Some patients may also experience some discomfort around their gums where the dental cement is holding their permanent crown, but this shouldn’t last longer than several days. And remember, just because you have a false tooth doesn’t mean your underlying tooth or surrounding gums aren’t prone to decay. Following proper dental hygiene is very important, with or without a dental crown.
Dental Crown or Dental Bridge?
Our dental team here in Hamilton often gets asked about the difference between dental crowns and dental bridges. We’re passionate about educating our patients as much as possible, so we welcome any questions you may have and will gladly go into more detail in person.
Crowns and bridges, while made from the same materials, are quite a bit different. Your professional Hamilton dentist will use a dental crown to affix to an implant when you have a single tooth missing or to cap or strengthen a tooth that is weakened by decay, a crack or break, or a root canal. A dental bridge, however, can replace either one or multiple missing teeth by utilizing the strength of surrounding natural teeth to support it. They have something in common though: they both look and feel like natural teeth, are very durable, and are long-lasting.
We Look Forward To Helping You & Your Teeth
Dental crowns offer some key benefits, by strengthening your teeth or replacing missing teeth while providing a very natural appearance. However, the procedure offers additional benefits to your bone health and the shape of your facial structure.
How?
Even just missing a single tooth can cause the surrounding teeth to shift into place, cause changes to your facial structure, and decrease your jawbone strength. This is why your professional dentist in our office here at Hamilton Mountain Dental works hard to create a custom oral health care plan for each patient requiring teeth restorations.
